gSender is great — but it's stuck at your desk
Let's be clear up front: gSender is an excellent piece of software. Sienci built a clean, approachable G-code sender that a lot of hobbyists — including plenty of OpenBuilds and Shapeoko owners — reach for first, and for good reason. UGS and OpenBuilds Control earn their followings too. This isn't a "gSender killer" article. It's about the one thing every one of those tools has in common, and what to do about it.
They all run on a desktop.
gSender, UGS, OpenBuilds Control, CNCjs, bCNC — every serious GRBL sender lives on a laptop or a host PC wired to the machine. That's not a flaw; it's a design choice that makes sense for a full-featured control station. But it means the moment you want to step away from the computer, you lose your read-out and your controls.
The problem a phone solves (and a desktop can't)
Think about the moments in a session where the desktop actually gets in your way:
- Setting work zero. You want to be at the bit, eyeballing it against the stock, not reaching back to a keyboard three feet away.
- Watching the first few minutes of a cut. You want to stand where you can see chips and hear the spindle, with a live position read-out in your hand — not glued to a fixed screen.
- Checking on a long job. You're doing something else in the shop and just want to glance at progress without walking back to the PC.
- Machines without a nearby computer. A garage MPCNC or a small engraver where setting up a whole laptop station is more hassle than the job is worth.
A phone is the natural tool for all of these. It's already in your pocket, it has a good screen, and you can carry it around the machine.
Companion, not replacement
The healthiest way to think about a mobile sender is as a companion to your desktop setup, not a rival to it. Different tools for different moments:
